Mila Kostović

I work with different spatial layerings, scales and their relations, from the individual body to the societal constellation.

My practice is transversal and dissonant: it moves between the lyrical and the conceptual, between body-based practice and text, between the intimate and the societal. What guides me is the contradiction between self-determination as an emancipatory practice and as a capitalist product. The body belonging to itself, yet simultaneously optimised and marketed, surfaces in my work as an ambiguity of the seductive and the disturbing. Within this field of tension, the foremost attempt is to expose the ideology behind the staging.

The fact that structural disadvantage restricts opportunities for action and that self-determination becomes a presumed threat is inscribed in the body and in space. My artistic practice therefore works from the inside out. A deep bodily presence and self-awareness can spill over into normative spaces and soften them. Relational movement sequences and collective movement layerings let subtle openings emerge, proposing an equally formed relationship between body and space.
